If you watch a lot of infomercials on TV, you can’t help but have seen the infomercials for the Jack LaLanne juicer.
Both Jack and his wife Elaine are in their mid-nineties – yet clearly have more pep and vitality than you or I.
And they owe it all to juicing!
I bought one of Jack’s juicers about three years ago. If the infomercial didn’t sway me, the fact that my local juice bar, where I regularly bought my carrot/apple/ginger juice, had three of them and were vocal about the fact that they far preferred Jack’s juicer to the $1000 “professional” model they had bought early on.
I did juice fairly regularly for awhile but, gradually, got out of the habit.
Lately, though, having a first thing in the morning “lemonade” has been one of my new habits. While browsing at Barnes & Noble the other day, I scanned a book on raw diets where the author recommended juicing every morning before eating, noting that your body would be flooded with enzymes. Considering that, despite my best efforts, I rarely manage to get in the required five daily servings of fruits and veggies every day, I decided to haul out the Jack LaLanne juicer.
I juice an entire lemon, along with two to three greens (usually spinach, cucumber and celery), an apple, some carrots and whatever I happen to have on hand. The resulting concoction is ugly as all get out, but it does taste surprisingly fabulous.
And, oddly enough, yes, I do feel those enzymes coursing through me.
We can all use a few more healthy enzymes.
