Changing my life … one habit at a time

Thoughts on Pantyhose and Flip Flops

cool-shoes-pumps-bwI don’t exactly know how long pantyhose have been out of style.

It’s been about 8 or 9 years since I was working in corporate America, in an office full of women, and we were all wearing them then.

I confess to being that rare breed of woman who actually liked pantyhose. I loved the different L’legg’s colors … Nude, Taupe, Off Black, Suntan. Not to mention the cute little containers that they came in before folks decided giant plastic eggs weren’t exactly environmentally friendly. The Sheer Energy version really did make my legs feel great. And I’m a redhead, so, if ever I did venture out of my bedroom without pantyhose on, my kids always accused me of wearing white stockings.

Pantyhose, like a great tan, cover a multitude of sins, from cellulite to having not shaved for a few days to those little spidery veins.

But, somewhere along the line the fashion powers that be decreed pantyhose out of style. Instead of the sleek look of a hose covered leg we are now treated to bare naked feet jammed into expensive pumps.

I don’t get it.

Two years ago I was working in an office, a casual office to be sure. I usually wore flip flops or my Asic Gel running shoes. One day, however, we had a VIP Visitor arriving and I had taken the trouble to dress in an expensive suit. Going with the style of the day, I wore no hose between my feet and my 9 West pumps.

I can’t tell you how uncomfortable it was. My feet felt terribly sweaty and by the end of the day I had blisters. And when I finally had the opportunity to take my shoes off, my $30 pedicure came with them. The polish was welded deep inside the shoes.

There must be some reason why pantyhose have fallen by the wayside. Sure, the celebrities look great. They have staffs of 4 or 5 just to maintain their legs and slather on body makeup. But for us mere mortals, I see one in ten women who actually look good running around in pumps and bare legs. How many women do you know with perfectly tanned, unveined, unblemished, baby’s bottom smooth legs? Not many I’d warrant.

I’d love to hear from men on this topic …

And don’t even get me started on flip flops. I foresee enough feet and leg disorders coming up – from young women who spend 90% of their time in flip flops – to start up a whole new breed of podiatrists specializing in flip flop damage.

Besides. Anyone can see they cause cankles.

I don’t get it either. My legs are not that bad looking, but there is no way I could wear a dress without pantyhose! My mother always stressed to me the importance of wearing them to complete your outfit. I won’t even go out wearing nice pants without at least those trouser socks that make it look like I’m wearing hose! And you can’t put enough powder in your shoes to make up for the awful sweat that you get without something on your feet!

I can’t remember the last time I wore pantyhose. I have some in an unopened bag. They are my “just in case” pair. I would rather wear trouser socks. But remember further back when we had to wear garter belts or girdles? Who would have thought back then that the flip flops would be such a hit.

I’m 58 & I haven’t worn pantyhose in at least 15 years (since I left corporate america). Then again, I don’t wear dresses much either. I live in Florida so my legs
(although veined) are not white. The miracle product I use is the tinted lotion
(I like L’Oreal). Mostly I wear capris, but even with a dress – pantyhose are WAY too much work – I’ll stick with my tinted lotion.

What feet problems from flip flops? As a native of the deep south, I’ve worn them every not-winter (Spring, Summer, and Fall) since I was old enough to actually need to wear shoes. I even keep up this dressing habit at my workplace which, also southern, sports many of us in either flip flops or Birkenstocks during the warmer months.

During winter, though, I do sport trouser socks with pants or pantyhose with skirts, because the feet need a friction buffer.

But your post had me worried about foot problems. I wonder if you wouldn’t mind expanding.

    Pam,

I see you wrote this sometime ago…but since you were interested in hearing from men…here is one man’s view. Totally agree with you. Hose is a lovely look–sorry it’s becoming more rare. Hang in there. And nice being on your thread. I even stole your status for a day or so because it was hilarious. The best.

    Jim

I have been working for Corporate America for quite some time and to be honest with you I do not know what I would have done without Pantyhose. I don’t wear flip flops either because my foot doctor told me it wasn’t good for my posture. So I totally agree with your article. Well done!
