Have you ever been lower than low and had someone say to you “why can’t you just be happy?”
Of course, it seems pretty impossible.
Of course you can’t just “be happy” if you’re feeling miserable.
Or can you?
Even the gurus routinely point to the “fake it til you make it” mind management tactic.
And I’ve got to confess, it’s worked for me in the past.
One example that comes to mind occurred years ago. I was working as an advertising sales representative for a newspaper. I’d taken the post because the publisher thought I would be great at it but was, quite honestly, terrified. My first cold call had me close to paralyzed with fear (I’m really quite shy).
After visiting with several potential clients it became clear that they weren’t going to bite my head off. We’re talking about independent businessmen and women – generally a great group of folk. My shyness gradually dissipated.
But I wasn’t making any sales.
This was long before the internet so I turned to books for help. The first one I picked up – How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie – proved to be invaluable.
I started showing a genuine interest in my clients. Even better, I stopped complaining (potential customers didn’t need to hear that my car needed a valve job and I had no idea where I was going to find the funds to do it).
I faked it with aplomb.
And wouldn’t you know it … it worked!
The concept here is you don’t know IF you can do it until you TRY! Enjoyed the post!
